241-“Somethin’ Stupid” – Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra
Pop quiz: Can you name the only two father-daughter teams who have had number one songs individually. Now, you just have to look at the title of this article to see one of the them. Frank and Nancy Sinatra (father and daughter) have a number one together with “Somethin’ Stupid.” Nancy had a number one back in 1966 with “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” and Frank has had more than one number one dating back into the Forties. But who is the other team?
I won’t keep you in suspense. It was Pat and Debbie Boone. Pat had number ones in the Fifties, six between 1955 and 1961 and Debbie had the biggest song of 1977 with “You Light Up My Life,” a huge number one hit. I wish Pat and Debbie had sung a number one together, but they did not.
Frank and Nancy had their own careers and their own producers. Nancy’s producer, Lee Hazlewood (whom she would record with that same year – “Jackson”) found the song “Somethin’ Stupid” which was written by C Carson Parks. Hazlewood took the song to Frank’s producer, Jimmy Bowen and the two producers got together and pitched the project to Frank and Nancy. Frank thought it would be the perfect project for the two of them and so the song was recorded.
Hazlewood says the recording session took about four takes, mainly because they were working with seasoned professionals. Some people at the recording company (Reprise Records) felt it was in bad taste for a father-daughter team to sing a love song, but when the record was released, no one seemed to notice.
You can’t really call this a one-hit wonder, since both Sinatras were stars in their own right, but they never sang together again. So, “Somethin’ Stupid” was a one time thing. Nancy went on to chart with Lee Hazlewood and by herself until 1968 when she faded from the charts. Frank did have a few more songs hit the Top 40, but they were minor. No one cared, Frank was an icon. He really didn’t need chart hits to further his career.
“Somethin’ Stupid” entered the pop charts on March 25, 1967 and stayed at the top for four weeks.
